Some species of ants maintain a relationship of mutualism with a fungus that they cultivate inside the anthill to feed. The relationship is such that the princesses of these species carry the fungus during the nuptial flight in order to be able to grow it in the new colony.

The cultivation of the mycelium requires a great specialization, the ants that dedicate to it distribute the different phases of the process between up to four different castes that are dedicated from the collection of all kinds of leaves that are propitias to feed the fungus until its cultivation and waste management.

The mycelium harvested is stored in the "Social Stomach" .
